About Us

Ostvytsia Workshop is the craft workshop of Ostvytsia, a park of historical reconstruction in Rivne, Ukraine. Everything in this store is designed and made by hand in our workshop.

Who we are

Ostvytsia is a cultural organisation that brings Ukrainian history and traditions closer to people through contemporary culture and art: performances, fairs, exhibitions, workshops, lectures and hands-on activities. Our open-air park lies at the foot of the Basivkut hillfort, an archaeological site of national importance, above the Basivkut reservoir in Rivne.

We work in historical reconstruction and experimental archaeology. We rebuild boats that sailed the rivers of this land more than 1,000 years ago, recreate archaeological finds of our region and study and revive old crafts. Visitors of the park can sail these boats, try traditional crafts and learn the history of the town and its ancient hillforts.

Why we make these things

The same love for history and myth that drives the park goes into our workshop. We make figurines of the gods and spirits of Slavic mythology and Ukrainian folklore, Norse gods and Viking Age motifs, and candle holders inspired by the Urnes style and the Oseberg ship. Some pieces are based on real archaeological finds, such as the Thor figurine from the Black Grave kurgan in Chernihiv. We want these stories to live not only in museums but also in people’s homes.

How we work

We sculpt and carve every design ourselves, then make each piece by hand from polymer resin, faux marble or alder wood and paint or finish it in our workshop. Because every item is handmade, small details differ from piece to piece. We sell online through this store and ship worldwide with Ukrposhta, free of charge.
